TORRE DELL'ORSO
Selvaggia non per il nome, ma per la sua bellezza peculiare.

Torre dell'Orso è costruita a picco sul mare, su un alto sperone di roccia, per poi fermarsi lasciando posto alla bellissima baia sabbiosa che caratterizza l'omonima località balneare. La torre è visivamente collegata a sud con l'ormai scomparsa Torre di Sant'Andrea e a nord con le torri gemelle di Roca vecchia. Sotto la torre, tra le morbide rocce frastagliate, si trovano diverse grotte, che costituiscono i ruderi rupestri frequentati fin dall'antichità. L'origine del nome è incerta. Le ipotesi però sono diverse: forse Orso può essere ricondotto a Urso, cognome di un possibile proprietario rurale in epoca antica. Secondo un'altra interpretazione, la torre sulla costa avrebbe preso il nome da un santo, il cui nome doveva essere Torre di Sant'Orsola, e quindi Torre dell'Orso. Un'altra ipotesi per il toponimo è che sotto la torre vi sia una roccia che rappresenta la sagoma di un orso.
La costruzione della torre fu affidata al maestro leccese Giovanni Tommaso Garappa. A causa della sua morte improvvisa, questo lavoro subì una brusca interruzione. I progetti furono successivamente completati da Angelo Garappa, fratello di Tommaso.

Nell'ottobre 2020 Torre dell’Orso rientra nella categoria di torri tipiche del Regno.
Gli importanti ruderi della torre furono danneggiati dall'erosione causata dal tempo. È costruita con bugnato regolare di tufo tenero. C'è ancora una fessura su un lato della muratura.

Wild not because of its name, but because of its peculiar beauty.

Torre dell'Orso is built sheer above the sea, on a high spur of rock, and then stops to make way for the beautiful sandy bay that characterises the seaside resort of the same name. The tower is visually connected to the south with the now defunct Torre di Sant'Andrea and to the north with the twin towers of Roca Vecchia. Beneath the tower, among the soft jagged rocks, there are several caves, which constitute rocky ruins frequented since ancient times. The origin of the name is uncertain. There are several hypotheses: perhaps Orso can be traced back to Urso, the surname of a possible rural owner in ancient times. According to another interpretation, the tower on the coast would have been named after a saint, whose name must have been Torre di Sant'Orsola, and therefore Torre dell'Orso. Another hypothesis for the toponym is that there is a rock under the tower that represents the silhouette of a bear.

The construction of the tower was entrusted to the Lecce master Giovanni Tommaso Garappa. Due to his sudden death, the work was abruptly interrupted. The projects were later completed by Angelo Garappa, Tommaso's brother.
In October 2020 Torre dell'Orso fell into the category of typical towers of the Kingdom.
The important ruins of the tower were damaged by erosion caused by time. It is built with regular ashlar of soft tuff. There is still a crack on one side of the masonry.
