SANTA MARIA DI LEUCA
Visita una delle più belle città del Salento per il suo mare e per i suoi panorami mozzafiato.
Il nome Santa Maria di Leuca ha un'origine precisa. "Leuca" era chiamata dagli antichi marinai greci provenienti dall'oriente, perché vedevano il luogo illuminato dal sole, da qui “leukos”, che significa bianco. Santa Maria di Leuca è un centro balneare, situato all'ingresso tra Ponta Ristola e Ponta Meliso, in un luogo magico, da sempre considerato l'interscambio Adriatico e Ionio. Le numerose grotte sono di grande importanza storica e naturalistica, ed i fondali marini sono un vero paradiso per il turismo subacqueo.

​Il Santuario di Finis Terrae nasce in un antico tempio dedicato alla dea Minerva. Una leggenda narra che il santuario, più volte distrutto e ricostruito fino all'attuale costruzione settecentesca, sia stato consacrato da San Pietro.

La devozione alla Madonna di Leuca ha una lunga storia e non conosce confini, tanto da trovare registri di pellegrinaggio provenienti da Polonia, Belgio e Francia. Secondo la leggenda popolare, visitare il santuario è il primo passo verso il paradiso. Davanti al santuario, un'alta colonna con capitello corinzio e croce in pietra in cima, ricorda il Pellegrinaggio giubilare del 1900 e il Passaggio di San Pietro.

Importante per le imbarcazioni è il faro situato sulla scogliera rocciosa, che dà la direzione alle barche.
Il porto di Santa Maria di Leuca si estende a sud-ovest del faro, fornendo riparo dai pericolosi venti di scirocco e dai temporali provenienti da sud. Il porto dispone di un molo peschereccio illuminato con deliziosi faretti.

La località di Santa Maria di Leuca, che facilita il contatto con le varie popolazioni mediterranee, ha sviluppato una cultura molto ricca, che si riflette nelle splendide ville. La prima risale al 1874, quando Giuseppe Ruggeri fece costruire questa elegante residenza chiamata Meridiana.

La Costa di Levante, con le sue alte rocce, offre molte suggestive grotte scavate nel corso dei secoli dalle mareggiate. Tuttavia, non mancano altre importanti grotte altrove. Nella vicina Grotta del Diavolo, così chiamata per gli oscuri brontolii che si sentono, ci sono stati ritrovamenti che hanno confermato che la grotta, era anche un importante sito paleolitico, considerato luogo sacro in epoca preistorica.

The name Santa Maria di Leuca has a precise origin. "Leuca" was called by the ancient Greek sailors from the East, because they saw the place lit up by the sun, hence "leukos", meaning white. Santa Maria di Leuca is a seaside resort, located at the entrance between Ponta Ristola and Ponta Meliso, in a magical place that has always been considered the Adriatic and Ionian interchange. The numerous caves are of great historical and naturalistic importance, and the seabed is a paradise for underwater tourism.
The Finis Terrae Sanctuary was created in an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Legend has it that the sanctuary, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times up to the present 18th century construction, was consecrated by St Peter.
Devotion to the Madonna di Leuca has a long history and knows no boundaries, so much so that there are records of pilgrimages from Poland, Belgium and France. According to popular legend, visiting the sanctuary is the first step towards paradise. In front of the sanctuary, a tall column with a Corinthian capital and a stone cross on top commemorates the Jubilee Pilgrimage of 1900 and the Passage of St. Peter.
Important for boats is the lighthouse located on the rocky cliff, which gives direction to the boats.
The harbour of Santa Maria di Leuca extends to the south-west of the lighthouse, providing shelter from the dangerous scirocco winds and storms from the south. The harbour has a fishing pier lit with lovely spotlights.

The town of Santa Maria di Leuca, which facilitates contact with the various Mediterranean peoples, has developed a very rich culture, which is reflected in the beautiful villas. The first dates back to 1874, when Giuseppe Ruggeri had this elegant residence called Meridiana built.
The Levante Coast, with its high rocks, offers many suggestive caves excavated over the centuries by the sea. However, there are other important caves elsewhere. In the nearby Grotta del Diavolo (Devil's Cave), so called because of the dark rumblings that can be heard, there have been findings that have confirmed that the cave was also an important Palaeolithic site, considered a sacred place in prehistoric times.
